The Coachella Valley Housing Coalition assumed control of the 1930s migrant farmworkers housing from the Indio Housing Development Company in the 1980’s. Located on Dr. Carreon Blvd., in the City of Indio, the Villa Hermosa Apartments serves low and very low-income farmworkers and their families. A master plan was developed in 2011 for the renovation of the 59.8 acre Fred Young site, which includes new construction to replace the existing 253 rental units with new housing, as well as some single-family housing and extensive renovation of the grounds and community facilities. The first phase of 83 new units was completed in April 2014 which included a community center, amenity areas, and an open space park. CVHC plans to complete the replacement of all remaining units by 2016. CVHC also plans to develop senior housing, more rental units, single family homes, and open park space on the remaining 45 acres that will be left. The project will also feature a community center.
